From Roc-A-Fella Records to Rocawear
Rocawear clothing is a private label company of hip hop clothing that was founded by Damon Dash, Jay-Z and Kareem Burke in 1999. Rocawear is an urban and hip hop-inspired clothing brand that was rooted from the realm of hip hop music. The company was created when the trio met and founded the Roc-A-Fella Records in 1996. Jay-Z produced his album Reasonable Doubt under Roc-A-Fella Records and brought home the bacon. He was crowned in the Grammy Award for the hip hop category in the release of the album. Jay-Z Reasonable Doubt album is included in the 500 greatest albums at all times (According to Rolling Stone Magazine).
Rocawear Clothing Company Timeline
In 2000, Rocawear contracted with Midway Games and Play station 2 to design clothing for “”Ready 2 Rumble”" game.
In 2002, Roc-a-Fella Picture and Lion’s Gate Film produced State Property, an urban drama film. Rocawear apparels are featured in the said film. On the same year, Rocawear office was inaugurated in Amsterdam; gathering annual sales of $ 120 million. In 2003, Rocawear sales increased to $ 300 million. The Roc-A-Fella film produced the sequel of State Property 2. Also, Damon Dash launched a lifestyle magazine called America. While, Naomi Campbell features as Rocawear representative along with Victoria and David Beckham. In 2004, Damon Dash was filed with a lawsuit due to rape case. It was also this year when the rift between the Rocawear founders, Dash and Jay-Z started. One of the sighted causes was when Def Jam Company bought out the Roc-A-Fella Record. At the end of 2004, Rocawear launched their jewelry line. In 2007, Jay-Z clinched to deal the company to Iconix Brand Group. On the same year, the company was accused of utilizing raccoon-dog fur for some Rocawear items.

Jay-Z is a well-known figure not only in the hip hop music but also in the entertainment and business industry. He is named as the first non-athlete to hold the record of fastest-selling Rebook shoe. He also received CG’s International Man of the Year Award. Jay-Z is also the co-owner of New Jersey Nets NBA Team, 40/40 Club and his very own S. Carter shoe collection. Rocawear is a prime clothing company that unexpectedly branched out to different fashion lines including underwear, bags, and shoes. In contempt of the rift and turbulence over the years, Rocawear manages to top style and function.
